View/discover saved IE Passwords

If you are a regular internet user chances are that you might have been prompted to fill up web forms, passwords fetch or internet email’s, forums, shopping sites and so on. When you type in for the first time,  IE displays the user a message box prompting you whether to save the password so that it can auto fill the next time you visit the site.

Well, this is good in one way, when you are browsing the web a lot and you are not sharing your PC with anyone else. If you are, then your passwords are at serious risk of being stolen by hackers.

One such tool which I reviewed recently is IE PassView a freeware utility which does reveals the passwords stored by Internet Explorer browser in the system registry. It supports the new Internet Explorer 7.0, as well as older versions of Internet explorer, v4.0 - v6.0. When run the tool automatically displays a list all auto-complete entries saved by IE.

IE PassView utility can recover 3 types of passwords:

AutoComplete Passwords: When you enter a Web page that contains a form with user/password fields and a login button, Internet Explorer may ask you if you want to save the password, after pressing the login button. If you choose to save the password, the password is saved as AutoComplete password.  Be aware that some Web sites (like Yahoo login page) deliberately disable the AutoComplete feature, in order to avoid password stealing by other users.
HTTP Authentication Passwords: Some Web sites allow the user to enter only after typing user and password in a separated dialog-box. If you choose to save the password in this login dialog-box, the password is saved as HTTP authentication password.
FTP Passwords: Simply the passwords of FTP addresses (ftp://…)
